The Swedish American Museum in Chicago’s Andersonville neighborhood is running a special exhibit on “Swedes at the Fair” from August 8 through November 2, 2025. The exhibit highlights Swedes and Swedish-American participation in the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition with displays about the Swedish Pavilion, the Swedish Restaurant [including an image from our post “Tales from the Swedish Café“], Sweden Day, the American Union of Swedish Singers, the Royal Swedish Commission, Pehr Samuel Peterson’s tree nursery, the Lapland Village, and the Viking Ship.

Special display items include a beautiful oil painting of the Swedish Villa at the World’s Columbian Exposition (1922) by Hugo Von Hofsten and a handsome ceramic pedestal made by the Rörstrand Swedish Porcelain Company circa 1890 purchased at the Exposition. A display case of books and photos rounds out the small but informative exhibit.

The Swedish American Museum, located at 5211 N. Clark St. in Chicago, is open Tuesdays through Saturdays.
Would love to confirm that Swedish immigrant artist Alfred Jansson was among several who painted murals in the Swedish Building at the fair.
Hi Wnedy. I’ll send you some information that I have. If other readers know more about Mr. Jansson’s murals, please share in the comments.
