Raise your glass to the 1893 World’s Fair with a new spirit that delivers tastes and aromas from the Columbian Exposition’s Agricultural and Horticultural buildings.

Journeyman Distillery of Three Oaks, Michigan, has partnered the Field Museum in Chicago to celebrate the museum’s 125th anniversary by creating Field Gin, a new small-batch spirit released in July 2018 and made using botanicals displayed at the World’s Columbian Exposition.

Among the Field Museum’s vast botany collection are some 1,500 historical botanical specimens from around the world that were displayed at the 1893 World’s Fair. Many were on display at the museum’s 2013 exhibition, “Opening the Vault’s: Wonders of the 1893 World’s Fair.”

From the Field’s catalog of historic botanicals, Journeyman selected fourteen to include among the twenty seven used to make their Field Gin, according to a report from Chicago Tonight. The bottle lists a miniature World’s Fair of flavors: lavender, bergamot, prickly ash, juniper, anise, flax seed, marshmallow root, annatto powder, mango, yuca root, ginger, coconut palm oil, red corn, ground mustard, fennel, millet, valerian root, charoli nuts, cinnamon, coffee, coriander, quinoa, star fruit, coconut, horehound herb, pineapple, and papaya.

Thorough investigations conducted here in the test lab of worldfairchicago1893.com (We do this difficult work for you, kind readers) revealed a pleasant combination of herbal and slightly spicy aromas—familiar juniper and mild anise taking the lead to a delicate and sweet finish.

Journeyman has also collaborated with the Field Museum to release a Field Vodka and Field Whiskey. A 750-ml bottle of Field Gin retails for $39.99 and is available for purchase for a limited time at Binny’s and other select retailers in Illinois, as well as at the Field Museum Store.
