“The child dancing with life and delight all through the days before Christmas is a fair emblem of what society should be in the presence of coming events … The meeting of Nations in 1893, the meeting on the shores of Lake Michigan, the meeting in a young republic, the meeting in such a period of intelligence unite to compose an event which should be to all Americans more than a Christmas to a child.
—Prof. David Swing (1830–1894) in “Inspiration in Events” The Illustrated World’s Fair Sept. 1891, p 14.
this is such a lovely picture! Is it also from the The Illustrated World’s Fair or is that where the quote is from?
The quote is from Illustrated World’s Fair. The image is an original creation. Glad you like it. It depicts what is likely an impossible scene, because the Statue of the Republic had not yet been erected in the winter of 1892, and the Peristyle behind it burned to the ground on January 8, 1894.
I appreciate your response! The picture really jumper out to me because I had never seen anything remotely it! Although I didn’t have the dates at my finger tips, I had a sense that this scene would have been likely impossibly. It’s very well done.
