Potter & Potter Auctions of Chicago will offer several interesting World’s Columbian Exposition items in their February 2nd auction, “Fine Books and Manuscripts: Featuring Important Chicago Memorabilia.”
A unique lot is a three-foot, golden Statue of the Republic plaster model, identified as being produced by Orlandi Statuary of Chicago in 1993 for the 100th anniversary of the Exposition. We reported on another of these statuettes (though one including both the staff for the left hand and the globe-with-eagle for the right hand) that came up for auction in October 2017 without selling; it eventually sold for $138 on January 28, 2018.
Three beautiful World’s Fair publications in the auction are Harlow Higinbotham’s Report of the President to the Board of Directors of the World’s Columbian Exposition (Rand, McNally & Co., 1898). Campbell’s Illustrated History of the World’s Columbian Exposition (N. Juul, 1894) bound in two volumes, and World’s Columbian Exposition 1893. Catalogue of the Russian Section (St. Petersburg, 1893).
Also up for auction is a “Banner of Enterprise” souvenir silk ribbon.
Potter & Potter Auctions is located at 3759 N. Ravenswood Ave., Suite 121, in Chicago.
