The Museum of Science and Industry (MSI) in Chicago occupies one of the few remaining buildings from the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition. To honor the 125th anniversary of the building and the fair, the museum is hosting “Night at the Fair” for their latest MSI After Hours event on June 15, 2018, from 7 to 10 pm.
MSI invites you to “don your best fair attire” (a glass dress, perhaps?) to travel back in time and become one of the 27 million guests who experienced the glitz and glamour of the World’s Fair. Sample rare music from the era; taste signature snacks and drinks made popular at the fair including popcorn, hot dogs and Pabst Blue Ribbon; and take selfies with some of the fair’s most popular guests including the Golden Lady of the Republic.
WBEZ’s Curious City podcast will be having a live presentation on the history of the fair. (Back in 2013, Curious City answered the question “What was it like to be a visitor at the 1893 World’s Fair?” using this video.)
This event is for those age 21 and older. Admission costs $30 and includes snacks, one beer or cocktail. A cash bar will also be available. Tickets are available here.
“Along the Plaisance” by Charles Graham offers some additional 1893 World’s Fair attire suggestions.
